The colors in themselves are lovely. I find that the bright green works well with the dark red. All the light sources seem to be alive and glowing, which is really neat. The font color is really yummy as well. I have a little problem with the wooden texture though. The tiling does not work really well, I think it could be more subtle. As it is now, I sort of looks like big stripes of textures vs big stripes of untextured color if you see what I mean. That in not so much of a problem, as the texture is quite toned down anyway.
Onto the features now. The first thing I noticed is the lack of a heading div. If one likes to have structured journals, it might be a problem, though it is not hard to code around that. I tend to find that without a heading, it looks more like a web page than a blog/journal.
I like the two features option you got there, both the box and the full thumb and column way. The rounded box looks cool. But I wonder why it is not in the middle. Is this because of the leaf design? it seems to be off to the left by a few px.
The top menu is well integrated thanks to that vine which helps the transition from title to menu to journal.
I also like this extra text next to the moods! Very handy to put copyright infos or philosophical quotations
All in all, this is a very nice layout (as usual), though I think it looks more like a pro web page than a DA Journal because of the lack of heading div which makes the whole journal too united (so i guess this is actually not a disadvantage
