Artist's Comments

The journal that was made for the upcoming tutorial. The first part, which explains how to code it for the old structure is done (18 pages), now i just need to make the same for the gruze version.

Even if it is already coded and was meant to be a free template first, i won't make it available yet. I guess you know why.
Therefore i'm going to use this for the contest as a template. Not sure if i will be able to finish everything till tomorrow as we will have guests today, but we will see.

Hope you like it.

As you know I am by no mean a pro when it comes to CSS, but I'll try to give my opinion on this design as thoroughly as I can.

The colors in themselves are lovely. I find that the bright green works well with the dark red. All the light sources seem to be alive and glowing, which is really neat. The font color is really yummy as well. I have a little problem with the wooden texture though. The tiling does not work really well, I think it could be more subtle. As it is now, I sort of looks like big stripes of textures vs big stripes of untextured color if you see what I mean. That in not so much of a problem, as the texture is quite toned down anyway.

Onto the features now. The first thing I noticed is the lack of a heading div. If one likes to have structured journals, it might be a problem, though it is not hard to code around that. I tend to find that without a heading, it looks more like a web page than a blog/journal.
I like the two features option you got there, both the box and the full thumb and column way. The rounded box looks cool. But I wonder why it is not in the middle. Is this because of the leaf design? it seems to be off to the left by a few px.
The top menu is well integrated thanks to that vine which helps the transition from title to menu to journal.
I also like this extra text next to the moods! Very handy to put copyright infos or philosophical quotations

All in all, this is a very nice layout (as usual), though I think it looks more like a pro web page than a DA Journal because of the lack of heading div which makes the whole journal too united (so i guess this is actually not a disadvantage )

Looks awesome. Love the frog in the bottom :giggle: and the "extra" text in the bottom is really useful as well

The only thing I can put my finger on is that the devious title and the date seems kinda un-aligned to eachother

oh and maybe turning the saturation in the font-color a bit down :eyes:

Thanks :D

Hm... they are un-aligned to each other, because one is aligned to the left and the other to the right.
Honestly the titles bugs me a lot - i hate to place titles in journals. Maybe i'll find a way to let it look better. Or do you have any suggestions? :flirty:

All font-colors or a special one?
I had them less saturated first, but it looked too "dark"(not really, but can't find any better word). Personally i like the green very much, but i can tone down the orange, if you think that it is too saturated

Hey I really love the tab and button selection on this skin. It is so appealing. I can't wait to see the tutorial now :D

Oh, that's good to hear :giggle:

You still have to be patient. Making the content for the tutorial is easy, bringing everything together and make it look good takes more time :slow:

maybe aligning the title to the right as well - or aligning the date and the image to the left (but that would throw of the balance).
You could also make the "Journal Entry" transparent and move the title down to be on the same line as the date (of course some times people tend to do very long journal titles and then it would go all caplooey.)

The best suggestion I would have is to move the title down so it follows the line of the menu and move the date up in the top right corner but leave the image where it is. does that make sense?

I think both of them could stand to be a little less saturated - but mostly the orange ;)
I actually like the very green in the feature title and the devious title - it's the links that get to me.

Nicely done. Ought to be an interesting tutorial! :D
One thing I would change. The background texture is hardly visible. I only saw it when I stood up (making the screen look slightly brighter)

Do something generous today.
Who knows, you might like it very much.
