Did You Know - Blocking

Mon Jun 9, 2014, 2:46 AM

Blocking

While many people tend to report other deviants they don't get along with  or they feel harassed by to the HelpDesk right away, your first action should always be blocking.

Whatever reason you have to report someone, by blocking you avoid any further communication with certain deviants.
This action is immediate, as you don't have to wait for any staff member to take action and you can just enjoy your dA experience without that blocked deviant.

Personal reasons like disagreeing on a topic, not liking someone or similar won't end with a ban of that other deviant.
Contacting the HelpDesk just adds to the queue of tickets unnecessarily and makes it more time consuming to focus on important reports.

:note: Only in case of serious harassment you should contact the HelpDesk.

If you are blocking someone it's an action in both directions. That means that not only the other person gets blocked from you, but you are automatically blocked for them as well.

The following will happen after a block:
• exchanging notes is not possible anymore
• leaving comments directly is not possible anymore (deviations,
   journals, profile, forum...)
• personal forum and shoutboard is blocked
• the deviant will be removed from your watchers list (if a watcher)
• you will be removed from the deviants watchers list
  (if you watch them)

If you (un)block someone or get (un)blocked there won't be any notifications. But if you see the image below on their profile you have been blocked and shouldn't contact that deviant anymore.

At certains area you will now see the Deviously Denied image, but not everywhere. In case you want to reply to a deviant who blocked you, you will get this message.

:note: If you get blocked by someone and use a different account to contact that deviant, it can result in a suspension or a permanent ban.

How to block

Go to the settings page, choose Personal > General and scroll down to the blocking section of that page.

There you can type down the name(s) of the person(s) you want to block now. One per line.

Once done, click save and those persons can't harass you anymore now.

You can also block someone via the comments settings. If you come across a deviant you want to block, click the little pencil icon and choose the Block User option.

You have to confirm this, to make sure you didn't click there accidentally.

And afterwards you get a notification, that the account has been added to your list of blocked deviants.

How to unblock

If you want to unblock someone again, go to the Settings page and remove the name you want to unblock

If you unblocked someone it will take 48 hours until you will be able to block them again.

This is a nice and informative journal.

Never in all my years did I ever think that I would be in a situation where I would be blocked/would have to block someone. It was polite agreement at first and I found myself politely disagreeing on small things. This artist must have taken the disagreement as an attack and never acknowledged the points we had in common.

Then a journal on the thing I disagreed with showed up and instead of commenting my views since they clearly already knew them, I just decided to talk to other deviants who shared my views and any one of them would tell you that I was also polite. I guess this person was overprotective of their commenters and thought it was a problem that I was agreeing with someone who shared my views just as they did on their journal. They said something along the lines of abuse and comment wars when I was conversing with other people as if they ever listened to me which is how we got here in the first place. I was finishing up conversations with the other commenters and then they blocked me. Now there is really no way to reason with people like that.

I think there should be a psuedo-court process so we can at least pretend that we are legally speaking with human beings instead of hastily blocking others because you can. I meant them no harm but they were too blind to see it.

Thank you.

Yeah, blocking can happen for various reasons. Not always they make sense though.

You're welcome!:)

Also, thank you for not having a problem with me commenting on other folks comments in this journal, respectfully of course.;D

Oh, one question. In order to prevent any monkey business, how does a block handle "mentions"? I just wouldn't want to run into this artist putting me on "blast" if you will and there will be nothing for me to do about it and vice versa (if it ever comes to this).

Thanks! :)

Everyone is free to share their opinion. :aww:

Hm, I am not sure. But my guess would be that you don't get mentions from those you blocked and that people you blocked don't get notifications for that either.

Okay, thank you so much!

I am still a bit shaken up by all this. All because they misunderstood me, they get to block me exclusively. I am not the only one who commented this way and there were way worse comments getting to the point of practically insulting this artist personally and I bet they were fine. Poor thing. The only other time I actually had to block someone was a few years back when I had this avid "fan" who kept pretending that they owned me and tried to dictate what and when I drew and even attempted to control my message board on Livestream. I'd say that is more like abuse. On my old account, I had to block someone who was outright bashing my artwork instead of constructively criticizing it which is something I greatly appreciate.

I'm sorry for all this reading you had to do, haha. Thanks again. It will be a while before I get over this as it was uncalled for and I never put myself in situations for other people block me.

We will never be able to complete avoid that such people cross our ways, but luckily such features/tools help to deal with them

Who on earth would need to block more than 500 people? :o I didn't know the level of dArama had escalated to that point :wow:

For some people it is not enough, but yeah... don't ask me. I have no idea!

I'm guessing there's nothing you can do if someone blocks you for politely disagreeing with them?

No, not really. You just have to accept that.

On the other hand, i am not sure if it really would make sense to communicate with people who do that. If they get easily offended, it might be better to not talk to them (imo).
