Did You Know - Thumbs Code

Thumbs Code

Whenever you do a feature or maybe want to link to a certain deviation the thumbs code is a very handy feature. It allows your viewers to see a smaller version of what you are referring to directly.

But did you know that there are several ways to make thumbs appear?
The most common way is to grab the thumbs code from the sidebar of a deviation.

That way you will get a little preview no bigger than 150x150px.
Hold me now by diensilver

Another thing you can do is to create a big thumb. For that you just need to add 'big' to the thumbcode, like :bigthumb###:
For our example it will look like this.
Hold me now by diensilver

Big thumbs will get no bigger than 300x300px.

Alongside those and thanks to AddMedia and Sta.sh you also vary the size on your own.
Either choose deviations from the AddMedia sidebar and make use of the transformation corners or use this code
<deviation width="150"  id="443670962">.

When defining the width make sure your deviation fits to the available space, especially when using narrow skins. The ID would be the number like from the thumb.

Hold me now by diensilver
(Using a width of 476)

Hold me now by diensilver
(Using a width of 350)

Hold me now by diensilver
(Using a width of 100)

:note: All these ways to add thumbs work for journals for deviants with or without a Premium Membership.

For other areas there are varying restrictions. Like you can use big thumbs in comments (if you have a Premium Membership), but not for descriptions.

On DeviantArt? You can't. You can just link in a regular way (image or text) to it.

In comments you can just use regular thumbs. That code works for journals.

I can't help you with that. If they don't work, it's the best to contact the Help Desk and to file a Bug Report.

I can`t add a normal thumb in my descriptions... I just copy and paste it, when I edit the deviation, I can see the pictur but when I upload it, it just shows the code :(

That's weird. If you are able to see it at the submission page it should also appear at the actual submission :o
Does it always happen?

You try to add it with the "AddMedia" version, as someone without a PM you can only use regular thumbs like :thumb###:. The other stuff won't work for you.

I know! But I just do it like in the picture above described :c I just copy and paste the thumb on the right side but then it changes into AddMedia when I upload it... when I type it in per hand, this happens: limegecko.deviantart.com/art/R…
Sorry for my english and the circumstances :c

Oh ok, thought you used it via AddMedia because of that code. Hm, but that's really weird then and i have no idea why it happens. Best would be to send in a Bug Report. Pretty much sounds like there isn't something the way it should be.

Sorry, that i can't help you with that further! :/

:o (Eek)

Probably it works only in journal for non-PM. Shh

You placed the bigthumb code in a comment, which is why it wasn't working.

If i use your thumbcode it works D:
But my Firebug tells me that there is hidden code in your comment, which might causes the problem. Try to copy&paste the thumb again or copy it from a blank editor file.

I'm doing this from the iPad.

Also, whenever I use the computer and use the :dev: markup, it doesn't work, but when I put the username into the computer search bar and put it into the comment again, it works. I don't know for thumb codes.

Yeah, that's what i meant. If you copy to a "non dA place" the hidden code will be deleted and just the visible text(devname or thumbcode) will stay. I have no idea why your iPad would add any extra code though.
Does it always happen, even if you copy the thumbcode directly from the sidebar?

So, do the :thumb###: codes work in descriptions only for deviants with premium memberships? Because when I tried to use them in my descriptions, all that showed up was <thumb###> (where ### was the number of the pic I was trying to link to).

As far as I remember only premium members can add thumbs to their deviation descriptions. Last time I was without PM I couldn't add thumbs, but now that I've got a PM I can. I don't know if it is intended to be that way, but it has been my experience that that is how it works.

Yeah, it looks like a premium-only feature. Pity I can't afford a membership... It might be intended to encourage people to upgrade to premium, I don't know. Oh, well... <shrug>

Thanks for the help, anyways...
