Did you know? - Suggesting DDs

Mon Mar 3, 2014, 9:31 AM
DD is short for Daily Deviation and is - like the name lets you presume - a daily feature of artworks from different the galleries.
DDs can be featured by Community Volunteers and Staff members.

Suggesting DDs

While browsing it can happen that you come across deviations that you think should be featured as a DD, but how?

First of all you need to take a look at the gallery it was submitted to.
You can find this information in the description area, directly below the artwork itself.

03 03 2014 01 by ginkgografix

With that category in mind, we are now heading over to communityrelations to take a look at this CV overview. It lists all volunteers and the gallery they take care of.

Beside the overview at communityrelations you can also find the same list at FAQ #18: Who selects Daily Deviations and how are they chosen?

For our example we now need to search for the Photography CVs.

03 03 2014 02 by ginkgografix

As you can see there are plenty of them, so we take a closer look at the sub categories.  The deviation was submitted to "Animal, Plants & Nature", means to have to search for a CV that takes care of that. If we can't find anyone, then we stick to a general photography CV.

03 03 2014 03 by ginkgografix

In this case there is a CV for "Animal, Plants & Nature". After that we also quickly check if there might be a special CV only for the "Birds" category, but as this is not the case we stick to our latest result.

Now you could go on by sending that deviation to the "A,P & N" CV via note right away, but it is recommend to check their DD guidelines first
(if there are any).
Most of the time a CV has their guidelines listed at their profile or links to them there. It makes sense to check those, if you are not familiar with suggestions in general or to that specific CV. They might have listed important things you should keep in mind for suggesting.

03 03 2014 04 by ginkgografix

Go through those guidelines and then go ahead sending the note with the deviation.

03 03 2014 05 by ginkgografix

And then you are done. Depending on the CV they will get back to you, if your suggestion was accepted or not.

:note: If you come across a deviation that has no CV, you can send your suggestions to Moonbeam13, Ikue, fourteenthstar or Thunderstatement.

I've suggested DDs in the past, but 99.9% of the time I don't get a response from the CV. So I gave up suggesting :(

Like i said to others already, not everyone responds to notes, unless you directly ask for. Or it just takes a while until they would get back to you. And then there is the chance that they wanted to feature something in the feature, but their time as a CV was up before.

I suggested something to neurotype recently but she couldn't feature it because the preview image was off Google :iconcryforeverplz:

Now that you've posted this wonderful guide... I guess I have no reason to be so lazy... I so rarely suggest people for DDs :noes:

That's always a shame if that happens. Or if credits are missing.

This was quite useful! Actually It's months I stopped using actively DA due to bachelor, but I had spotted some good art out here and wondered how to feature them as DD and how the whole thing worked... Thanks!:D

This is good to know. I've suggested a deviation and sent it to the wrong person once. :ashamed: But I've suggested many and none were put into DD. And they were worthy IMO. :( So I just gave up.

That can always happen and is nothing to worry about

The "worthy" bit is always subjective and kinda difficult to judge, but usually CVs don't have a chance to feature everything they want, as they can always only pick one per day. Like i said before, even if you just receive two notes per day the backlog would pile up quickly and you can't feature everything anymore. So luck is also a big factor for DDs.

Ah that makes sense. So many DA members, not enough time. :faint: Really the luck of the draw, and the CV's choice. I read your reply to SnowblindOtter and that makes sense too. ^^;

It's a difficult topic for sure and there are a lot of things you have to keep in mind for DDs.
And sometimes it is wiser to decline a suggestion to avoid pointless drama for the artist (whom art was suggested), because not everyone appreciates everything they see or do understand it.

Like "my" category - deviantART related - attracts a lot of drama because people think that (for example) stamps or icons shouldn't get DDs because they are too small, not enough of a masterpiece and so on.
But for those who are into stamps and avatars it is a whole different story

I've suggested DD's for artists who have really worked hard and who I think honestly deserve the recognition, and not even once gotten a response from a CV :/

I understand that some CVs are extremely busy because they manage popular categories, but even a one-line "Sorry, we don't think it qualifies but thank you anyway," would suffice as an answer. If the CVs can't be arsed to reply then I can't be bothered to suggest DD's if my pm's are just going to be ignored.

Pretty much what ginkgografix said, counts for me as well. I've stated in my guidelines that I won't respond to DD suggestions. Not that I'll ever reply, I mean, I tell people when they've suggested me thing I can't feature, because it's Digital Art for example, or if the deviant had a DD in the last 6 months. And I also reply when people ask if I can reply to them =) I just don't want people to expect a reply from me just because they send me a suggestion (and sometimes 10 in a row).
I sometimes feature things that were suggested months ago, for example because I featured a kingfisher yesterday. If I get another kingfisher suggested today, I won't be featuring that any time soon. I won't reply to the suggester immediately because I'll reply letting them know when I've actually scheduled it for the DD. That can be months later.

During my first term I did reply to DD suggestions at first, but I gave up rather quickly. A) Because I really couldn't keep up and would rather do other CV things, and B) Because some people were really rude towards me when I told them why I wouldn't feature it, with reasoning.

I don't expect you to suddenly start suggesting again, but I wanted to explain from my side of view since I'm one of them :B

Related to that i can only speak for myself and i have stated clearly in my DD guidelines that i don't respond to suggestions, unless the suggester directly asks for it. I also never ignore any suggestion i get. Just don't reply.
In my case i rarely decline a suggestion right away, but still it could take weeks until i decide to give it a DD - mainly because i have subgalleries that differ a lot and i like to vary the things i feature.

And it's also difficult to figure out how people like their responses. You said it would be fine for you to get a one-liner. Other people would be offended by that or if a CV would reply with a generic sentence.
In case you change your mind, maybe add a simple "would like to know if you feature this" (or similar) if you haven't yet. I am sure you would receive a reply then - but of course it depends on the CV.

You know, I've tried suggesting so many submissions that really deserve Daily Deviations, and I keep getting told they just don't want to take that particular suggestion. Not that it 'doesn't qualify' as a DD, but that they just don't want to.

I really don't even sift through the Daily Deviation section anymore. It's just a Hollywood marketing scam, that caters to the artists with the deepest pockets, in my opinion. There's a lot of extremely talented artists that don't receive half the recognition they deserve, unless they can ante up. What ever happened to the days where people worked hard, and proved themselves through talent and skill, that they deserved popularity rather than shelling out their hard-earned money to a bunch of gluttonous aristocrats that already have more than enough?

I have to ask, what do we get from the artists with the deepest pockets? A system based on bribery needs bribes to work, and can't say I've received any :B

Hm, that could always happen, but it does always depend on the CVs. Some might personally dislike certain themes etc, so that they don't really want to go with that. But i can understand that such a reason is disappointing. I guess i would feel similar about it.

May i ask why you think so and how this should work?
DDs are a feature that are not in any way related to money or other "you do this for me and i do this for you" kinda things. Of course it is like the lottery. If luck is on your side and your art gets suggested at the right moment, to the right CV etc it might gets a DD. Yes, there are a lot of artists who deserve more attention, but it's easy to oversee them... just because of the massive amount of artworks submitted here. And every CV can only feature one DD per day. So if you would get only 2 DD suggestions daily, you can't already keep up with it, even if they all would qualify and you want to feature them. Sad but true.

On a different note, i try to give attention to those who aren't that known yet and even that is something people complain about. The whole DD topic is always difficult and everyone has a different opinion about it. Yet, for me personally, it is always rewarding when i see that someone got happy because of a DD they got - no matter how popular they are or not. Because in the end the DD just has an impact on that artists for the 24h. Only in a very few cases it really does change anything at all

If it isn't a 'subscription service', then the way it should work is a more impartial Volunteer system. Just because a CV doesn't like a particular theme, doesn't give them the right to deny somebody who legitimately deserves recognition for their abilities. If that is how the CV's work, then there needs to be a serious overhaul in the Volunteer staff.

Every CV is an individual that can have their own additional "rules". Just because one acts like that, it doesn't mean that the rest does as well.
And in such cases - if you get such a response and are unhappy about it - you could always contact Moonbeam13 about it.
