The following deviant is an active admin of a popular meme group on deviantArt. Their group get a lot of submissions and that means that they get to see a lot of different memes as well. Because of that I have asked them to answer a few questions for us, all related to memes.

Hiya! I'm Raven and I run the group MEME-Love here on deviantART! We showcase filled memes from all over dA. I don't create memes, but I have been known to fill some out when in a creative slump. They're great ways to help with art block.
Do you think it matters for people if a meme template is visually appealing or not? Or would you say that the fun-factor is more important? And what matters more for you personally?
It certainly matters to me that a meme be visually appealing because it helps work through the prompts. Even if it's just the use of typography. It also shows the creator put effort into the meme. That doesn't mean that less visually appealing memes can't be fun! Ultimately, it's the content of the meme that makes or breaks it.

Going through the submissions, there is most definitely a trend, depending on the time of the year. End of the year is a big time for MEME-Love because all of those end of the year in review memes come through. Those are some of my favorites, because you can see how much someone has improved over the year! The draw this again meme fav.me/d2xu044 is popular year round and is another fun one. For the longest time, the "grab my ____" meme was incredibly popular, but it's been months since I've seen a submission.
What advice would you give to people who would want to create their own memes?
If you want to create your own meme, just go for it! Keep in mind color choices and fonts. I've seen some memes offered in different languages so more people can enjoy them, and I think that's wonderful! Memes are so much fun to do, and the more people who can enjoy them, the better. If you're just looking for something fast and fun to do, then one of the "favorite characters from this series" memes or something similar would be recommended. If you're willing to put more effort into something, then go for the "draw this again" or prompting memes, like the "art block meme" or "remie's double meme" (that one is great because you grab a friend, or a random artist and make a friend!).
Remie's Double Meme will forever be one of my favorites, as is this OC meme which I'd love to do again with updated characters (I was such a weeb back then). The OC meme, I think, was the first one I filled out? That or the 2012 meme (the original doesn't seem to exist on dA anymore? I probably have it saved on my computer somewhere though.)
